An urgent warning has been issued to Apple Watch users after a popular charger was recalled over fire risks. Accessory maker Belkin announced the global recall of its $160 BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K, which was also sold in the Apple Store. The faulty power bank features the model number BPD005, which can be found on the back, and was released in May 2023.
The company identified a manufacturing defect that can cause the lithium cell to overheat, posing a fire hazard to users. Belkin shared in the announcement to place the BPD005 in a safe, dry location away from anything flammable and not to discard it in trash or recycling bins. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has yet to make an official announcement about the recall.
Belkin has pulled the charger from its website, but third-party sites still show it for sale. If you have purchased the Belkin BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K, BPD005, it is important to immediately stop using it, disconnect it from any power supply or other products, and contact the company for further instructions. The company quietly pulled the power bank from its site in October with no reported injuries.
Belkin stated that no other Belkin wireless chargers or any other Belkin products are affected by this recall. The company will refund consumers who purchased the faulty power bank. While the extent of the recall is unclear, it is essential for users to follow the instructions provided to ensure safety.
Belkin had a previous recall in 2021 over the risk of fire with its Boost Charge Portable Wireless Charger + Stand Special Edition (WIZ003). Additionally, Anker recalled its MagGo Battery (PowerCore 10K), Power Bank, and MagGo Power Bank due to the risk of overheating and fire hazards. Anker advised customers to stop using the product and dispose of it at a facility that accepts lithium batteries.
It is crucial for consumers to pay attention to product recalls and take the necessary steps to ensure their safety. The quality control and safety measures of electronic accessories play a significant role in preventing potential hazards. By following the guidelines provided by the manufacturers, users can protect themselves from risks associated with faulty products.
