Behringer has recently introduced a new addition to its Producer series of compact semi-modular desktop synthesizers. The Grind synthesizer is a hybrid instrument that offers a wide range of sonic capabilities at an affordable price point. It features a combination of digital oscillators and a 24dB analogue ladder filter, providing a versatile sound palette for musicians and producers.
The Grind synthesizer includes 24 different oscillator types, such as virtual analogue, wavetable, additive, waveshaping, Karplus-Strong, and FM synthesis. Additionally, users can access emulations of classic synths like the Yamaha DX7 and Roland TR-303. Interestingly, 15 of the synth engines in the Grind were originally developed by Mutable Instruments, a boutique synth company known for its innovative designs.
In terms of functionality, the Grind comes equipped with an arpeggiator and a 32-step sequencer that can store up to eight banks of 64 patterns. While the envelope and LFO options are relatively basic, the 34-point patchbay on the Grind allows for extensive modulation possibilities and integration with other gear or Eurorack systems. Despite being monophonic, users can poly-chain multiple Behringer synths to create a polyphonic setup with up to 16 voices.
Connectivity options on the Grind include MIDI In, Out, and Thru, as well as MIDI USB and two 3.5mm audio outputs. Unlike other synths in Behringer’s Producer series, which draw inspiration from Moog’s semi-modular synthesizers, the Grind has a design aesthetic reminiscent of the Arturia MicroFreak.
With a price tag of $199, the Grind synthesizer offers an affordable entry point for musicians looking to explore the world of semi-modular synthesis. For more information on the Grind and other Behringer products, visit the company’s website.
