Google Photos is getting ready to make it easier for users to identify AI-generated images. With the increasing use of AI in image editing and creation, it has become challenging to distinguish between real and AI-generated images. The upcoming update in Google Photos will display IPTC credit metadata on images, providing valuable information to determine if an image is AI-generated.

Although the changes are not yet live in Google Photos, the new layout files in the app’s version 7.3 suggest that the feature could roll out in the future. The XML code found in the app indicates that the update will show details such as the image’s credit tag, digital source type, and information about the AI or model used to generate the image.

For example, images created with Google Gemini usually have a “Made with Google AI” credit tag, which can be viewed in the image’s EXIF data. Google Photos also adds tags like “AI-Generated with Google Photos” or “AI-Generated with Google” when using Magic Editor. The app will also indicate if an image has been corrected or enhanced using a Generative AI model.

The inclusion of IPTC metadata in the image details section will facilitate the identification of AI-generated images. This feature will be particularly useful as AI-generated images become more prevalent in our daily lives.

While the update is not live yet, the rapid rise of AI-generated images suggests that the feature will be available soon. Keep an eye out for this helpful addition to Google Photos in the near future.
