Raghavan, who has been appointed as Google’s Chief Technologist, previously held the position of senior vice president overseeing various key products such as Google Search, Assistant, Geo, Ads, Commerce, and Payments. CEO Sundar Pichai expressed his confidence in Raghavan’s abilities, stating that it was time for him to take on a new challenge and embrace the role of Chief Technologist after leading teams at Google for 12 years.
Born in Bhopal, Prabhakar Raghavan’s educational journey began at Campion school before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at IIT Madras. He furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986.
Throughout his career, Raghavan has held research roles at IBM and served as the senior manager of the computer science principles and methodologies department at the Almaden Research Center in Silicon Valley. His tenure at Yahoo! as the head of Yahoo! Research in Sunnyvale, California, and subsequent move to Google in 2012 have solidified his reputation as a respected figure in the tech industry.
