Emerson adds flow sensor for data center cooling systems
The Rosemount 8795 measures chilled-water and water-glycol flow, including in installations with limited straight-pipe space.

Emerson has introduced the Rosemount 8795 Magnetic Flow Sensor for measuring chilled-water and water-glycol flow in data center cooling systems. The sensor is designed for closed-loop applications and works with compatible Rosemount magnetic flow transmitters.
The product is aimed at cooling installations where space can limit the straight lengths of pipe normally required for flow measurement. With Emerson’s Short Run Installation software and compatible transmitters, it can achieve 0.5% accuracy without an upstream straight-pipe run under specified installation conditions, according to Emerson.
That flexibility could help operators measure cooling-water flow in constrained layouts while monitoring systems that support data center operations. The sensor also provides 0.1% repeatability, Emerson says, and is available for pipe sizes from 2 to 18 inches.
Installation and measurement
Where there is enough straight pipe, Emerson specifies accuracy of 0.2% ± 2 mm/s. One account of the product’s specifications says this applies with at least five pipe diameters of straight pipe upstream and two downstream when paired with compatible transmitters.
The sensor has a polytetrafluoroethylene liner and stainless-steel electrodes. Emerson says compatible transmitters provide built-in diagnostics and verification capabilities, which can help operators monitor cooling performance and identify potential measurement issues.
Connecting cooling data
Flow data can be integrated with building management systems and data center infrastructure management platforms, allowing operators to track cooling performance and water and energy efficiency metrics. The unit supports Modbus communication and dual 4–20 mA outputs, with AC or DC power options.
Emerson vice president of magnetic and vortex flow products Bob Halgren said the sensor is intended to help operators improve reliability, simplify deployment and maximize cooling performance. Emerson has not announced pricing or an availability date in the product information.
