Welsh Cabinet Minister Adam Price is in Boston from Oct. 12 to 16 to pursue trade and investment links in artificial intelligence, technology and digital industries. The visit brings him together with companies, investors and business leaders with ties to Wales, as the Welsh Government seeks to attract investment and expand business connections.

The meetings include Microchip Technology, a semiconductor manufacturer with a base in Caldicot, Wales, and Sublime Systems, a Boston-based company working on lower-carbon cement for construction. Price will also meet businesses in life sciences and energy.

No specific investment agreements or funding commitments are named in the announcements. The trip is focused on building relationships and presenting Wales as a place for technology businesses and investors to work with.

Companies and trade links

The Welsh Government says the visit is intended to open trade and investment opportunities across AI and digital technology, as well as life sciences and energy. The agenda also includes engagement with Welsh expatriates in the Boston area, in support of a planned Diaspora Strategy. The strategy is intended to promote investment in Wales by entrepreneurs overseas and encourage recent emigrants to return.

Price said Boston is “one of the world’s most dynamic technology hubs” and said the visit aims to position Wales as a partner for AI and technology investment. He said meetings with businesses, investors and the Welsh community could help bring jobs and opportunities to Wales.

Summit and Harvard address

Price will represent Wales at the ministerial summit of the Disruptive & Emerging Technologies Alliance, a network of 21 governments. Wales is a founding member. The group works on issues including AI, cybersecurity, quantum technologies and digital rights; it also discusses how governments can respond to emerging technology.

At Harvard University’s Growth Lab, Price is scheduled to speak on “Can Small Nations Compete and Win in the Age of AI? The Case of Wales.” The talk will address how Wales is using AI adoption, clean energy and skills development to support economic growth. The announcements do not specify what follow-up steps or outcomes will result from the meetings.
