OLED Tablet Panel Shipments Soar to Record Highs Driven by Apple’s iPad Pro

The OLED tablet panel market is experiencing unprecedented growth in the second quarter of 2024, with shipments reaching a record high of 4.11 million units. This surge represents a remarkable 142% increase quarter-over-quarter and an astounding 356% rise year-over-year. The driving force behind this exponential growth is none other than Apple’s latest iPad Pro models, which have captured the hearts of consumers with their cutting-edge technology and sleek design.

Apple’s new 11.1” and 13” iPad Pro M4 (2024) models have set a new standard in the tablet industry by introducing the first tandem OLED stack panels. These panels not only offer superior image quality but also contribute to the devices’ slim and elegant profile. As a result, Apple has solidified its position as the leader in the OLED tablet panel market, commanding a commanding 72% share. Huawei follows closely with a 13% share, while Samsung holds a 9% share.

The 13” OLED iPad Pro M4 (2024) has emerged as the top model for the second consecutive quarter, with both the 13” and 11.1” models each capturing a 36% share in panel procurement. Huawei’s Mate Pad Pro 13.2” secures the third spot with a 5% share. In terms of panel suppliers, LG Display and Samsung Display dominate the market, each holding a 41% share.

Looking ahead to the third quarter of 2024, OLED tablet panel shipments are projected to decline by 9% sequentially but grow by an impressive 153% year-over-year to 3.75 million panels. While Apple’s share is expected to decrease slightly, new entrants like Honor and Microsoft are poised to make significant gains, along with increased production from Huawei, Lenovo, and Samsung. Huawei’s introduction of the first tandem stack OLED tablet outside of Apple and Samsung’s ramped-up production for the upcoming Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and S10 Ultra are expected to drive market growth.

Apple’s share is forecasted to fall to 45%, with Samsung and Huawei gaining ground at 20% and 18%, respectively. The 11.1” OLED iPad Pro is anticipated to lead in panel procurement for Q3 2024, with a 28% share compared to the 13” iPad Pro’s 17%. The new Honor Magic Pad 2 is expected to secure the third position with an 8% share. Samsung Display is projected to lead the market with a 47% share, followed by EDO at 24% and LG Display at 23%.

The number of OLED tablet models purchasing panels is set to increase to 19 in Q3 2024, up from 10 in Q3 2023. This expansion reflects the growing demand for high-quality displays and the increasing competitiveness in the OLED tablet market. DSCC CEO Ross Young predicts that 2024 will be a landmark year for OLED tablets, with projections indicating over 200% growth to more than 13 million OLED tablet panels.

Advancements in availability, performance, cost, and form factors are driving this growth. OLED tablets now offer improved brightness, power efficiency, and longevity, with various form factors including rigid, hybrid, and flexible options. The reduction in weight and thickness, coupled with enhanced display technology, is enhancing the overall user experience. The rising number of suppliers providing OLED tablet panels underscores the expanding market and the growing demand for top-notch displays.

In conclusion, the OLED tablet panel market is witnessing a period of rapid evolution and innovation, fueled by the relentless pursuit of excellence by industry leaders like Apple, Huawei, and Samsung. As consumers increasingly gravitate towards OLED tablets for their superior image quality and sleek design, the market is poised for further growth and diversification in the coming years. With technological advancements driving improvements in performance and form factors, the future of OLED tablets looks brighter than ever before.
