Metamorphosis is a fascinating process that occurs in many insects, including mealworms. At the Orlando Science Center, visitors like Marquise Meda can witness this transformation firsthand. Mealworms go through four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and beetle. The pupa stage is particularly interesting because it is a living form where the insect undergoes metamorphosis. Just like a butterfly pupa, if you were to touch it, you would see movement.
The mealworms at the Science Center eventually turn into darkling beetles, which can be found on every continent except Antarctica. These beetles play an important role in the ecosystem and are even used as food for other animals at the center, such as owls and alligators. The entire life cycle of a mealworm, from egg to beetle, takes about two months to complete. During this time, the insects molt and go through different instars before reaching the pupa stage.
Visitors to the Orlando Science Center can learn more about metamorphosis and other scientific phenomena during Sci Fi Month. The center is open every day from 10 to 5, except on Wednesdays. So, if you’re curious about the mysteries of metamorphosis or want to explore other cool science exhibits, be sure to stop by and expand your knowledge. Who knows, you might even develop a newfound appreciation for these creepy crawlies and the fascinating process of metamorphosis.
