I’m Tired of AI Hype
Look, I’ve been around the tech block a few times. Started coding in ’98, saw the dot-com boom and bust, the rise of mobile, and now this AI stuff. But honestly? I’m tired. Tired of the hype. Tired of the committment to making everything sound like we’re on the brink of singularity.
Last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. Some CEO—let’s call him Marcus—stood up and said, “AI is gonna revolutionize everything. It’s the future.” I asked him, “Yeah, but what about the physicaly impossible tasks?” He just smiled. Which… yeah. Fair enough.
AI Can’t Do My Job
I edit for a living. Words, structure, tone—it’s not just about stringing sentences together. It’s about feeling, about soul. And AI? It’s completley soulless.
About three months ago, I had a chat with a colleague named Dave. He’s all into these AI writing tools. “It’s gonna replace us all,” he said. I told him, “Dave, you’re an idiot.” (Love you, Dave.)
AI can generate text. Big whoop. But can it argue with a stubborn author at 11:30pm over whether “data is” or “data are”? Can it make a writer laugh so hard they snort? Nope. It can’t. And that’s why I’m not worried about AI taking my job.
AI and Cybersecurity: A Love Story
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not anti-AI. I just think we need to keep it in check. Take cybersecurity, for example. AI can spot patterns, flag anomalies, all that jazz. But it’s not a silver bullet. It’s a tool. A useful tool, sure, but still just a tool.
I remember reading useful information daily tips on how to secure your network. AI can help, but it’s not gonna do the job for you. You still need humans. Humans who can think critically, adapt, and make judgment calls.
My AI Pet Peeve
Here’s what really grinds my gears. AI is only as good as the data it’s trained on. Garbage in, garbage out. And who’s determining what’s good data? Humans. Humans with biases, humans with agendas. So when people say AI is objective, I just laugh.
I had this argument with a friend last week. She’s all, “AI is unbiased.” I said, “Have you seen the news lately?” She didn’t get it. I gave up.
A Tangent: The Time I Tried an AI Dating App
Okay, this is kinda off topic, but whatever. So, I tried one of those AI dating apps. You know, where it learns your preferences and suggests matches. Big mistake.
First off, it suggested I date a cat. Not a person who likes cats. An actual cat. Then it kept suggesting people who live more than 214 miles away. I mean, come on. I’m not gonna drive that far for a first date.
But the worst part? It kept suggesting people based on my browsing history. I looked up some stuff for an article, and suddenly I’m getting matched with people into… let’s just say adult stuff. Not my thing. At all.
Back to Reality
Look, AI is cool. It’s useful. But it’s not the be-all and end-all. It’s not gonna replace humans. It’s not gonna solve all our problems. It’s a tool. And like any tool, it’s only as good as the person using it.
So, let’s calm down with the hype. Let’s focus on the real work. The work that humans do. The work that matters.
And for the love of all that’s holy, let’s stop saying “game-changer.” It’s 2023, not 2003.
